Susan Rollins
Featured Artist working With Oil and Monotypes

I am a Connecticut-based painter and printmaker, originally from South Florida. My recent work focuses on our rapidly changing climate and humanity’s impact on the natural world. Following a series of oil paintings and monotypes focusing on landscapes, flora, and fauna, I migrated to a series of “altered landscapes,” which are statements about our environmental crisis from a historical perspective. I sometimes use fragments of antique printed material, which add a layer of meaning that I often don’t plan - it emerges as I am working, and I am always excited when this happens. My most recent paintings, the Before/After series, have a “window” of what was and is a traditional landscape surrounded by what could or will be if we don’t act quickly. The windows are a glimpse through a background that is expressionist: dark, chaotic, and perhaps ominous, to a place that is peaceful and welcoming. The windows are meant to be beacons of hope- we can keep what we have if we don’t ignore what we see. I am also experimenting with flipping that construct and having the window be a glimpse into the possible future, surrounded by what is or has been. I continue to be drawn to painting traditional landscapes and representational subjects, but I love the action and uncertainty of abstract expressionist painting and the unknown and exciting images that result. This current Before/After series is a combination of both and has been the most compelling work I have produced so far.
